need to do to not only remain competitive, but improve that condition? Many would think that the United States is competitive enough because it has the largest economy and is
the wealthiest nation in the world. However, when it comes to being competitive, a lot has to do with the labor pool, the available educational possibilities and the quality of
that education. It also has to do with the changing culture. In addressing this issue, it is easy to see that a variety of institutions are implicit in the discussion
of U.S. competitiveness. Its business interests are of the utmost importance but education is also vital. Of course, the legal system comes into play as well, but the U.S. has
been aligned with perhaps the best in the world. People know that they have their best chances for justice in the United States. It has been criticized by some in
the world as being too harsh as many nations around the globe have abolished the death penalty. The United States is the only modern western state to use capital punishment
(Sancton, 2001). To some extent, this is something that sets the U.S. apart from the rest of the world in a negative way and the nation has been called uncivilized
as a result. Perhaps the culture of the United States is the thing most criticized. It embraces a pop culture mentality and does little to support high culture or
tradition. It also sees a culture that embraces consumerism. With such a high level of affluence, many people are becoming lazy and unhealthy. They do not take care of themselves
