PG). In The Aeneid, a man named Aeneas looks for a new place to build a city. His nemesis is a goddess named Juno who tries to prevent such a settlement from coming about. When the characters end up in the city of Carthage, they have the opportunity to attend a large banquet. At the banquet Aeneas tells Queen Dido his life story. Aeneas tells the queen of his suffering as well as his fathers and his sons and how he and a group of people have been on a quest to find new territory. Dido becomes enamored with Aeneas and while the pair do end up blissfully living together for about a years time, the relationship ends in tragedy. Dido would kill herself and Aeneas would leave Carthage. When he visits his father, he once again becomes inspired and his excursion to Carthage is merely a fading memory. He is suddenly more interested in his future and the fate of his people. He cannot have a love relationship with Dido and continue to build a new settlement. His mind is coerced by the love interest. However, when Aeneas reaches Rome he is told that he must marry a girl named Lavinia so that Trojan and Latin blood will be mixed. A war soon breaks out after Junos meddling and a man who was himself infatuated with Lavinia opposes Aeneas. Finally, after a long battle, there is a one on one fight between Aeneas and Turnus. Aeneas is the ultimate victor. The work ends with the following lines: "The streaming blood distaind his arms around, And the disdainful soul came rushing thro the wound" (Virgil PG).
