how the storm described in the story helps readers understand the character of Ann. Discussion The story is easily told: Anns husband John goes to his fathers farm in the
middle of a terrible winter storm. Ann is fearful and urges him not to leave, but he feels he must help the old man. While hes gone, a friend of
theirs, Steven, comes to the house to help Ann with the chores; believing that John will not have tried to return in the blizzard, the two have a casual sexual
encounter. But John in fact does come home, sees them and leaves again, freezing to death a mile from the house. The bare-bones description makes it sound like Ann is
a whore, John a dolt and Steven a user, but all three are far more complex than that. The storm is a perfect metaphor for Anns state of mind, because
she is prey to violent emotions, swirling in all directions, unable to be anything other than what she is. She seems almost like a force of nature, caged on a
farm for seven years when she really wants to be free. Ross conveys the scene with great mastery, showing us how cold it is in a few words: "The
sun was risen above the frost mists now, so keen and hard a glitter on the snow that instead of warmth its rays seemed shedding cold" (Ross). The reader immediately
understands the depth and danger represented by such cold, and wonders why John feels the necessity to go out in it to help his father. The mans farm is five
miles away if he walks through the hills, but 17 by road; either way it will be a terrible ordeal. Ann tries to talk him out of going, but he
