is a relatively new endeavor for sociologists, the truth is that such endeavors have been taking place for centuries. This is because humanity perhaps has a natural desire to understand why people live a particular way in different social classes. In Jacob Riis work, published in 1890, the author sets out to examine the conditions of "the other half" in New York. The following paper summarizes and reviews the work. How the Other Half Lives by Jacob Riis This particular work touches on many different environments in New York at the time the book was written. The author discusses Chinese people, the Jews, what the author calls Bohemians, and many other sub cultures of the city. In order to truly delve into each area, and better summarize on their own, the student can look at the various chapters, all of which clearly illustrate different cultures within the city. For example, in looking at his chapter, "The Italian in New York," he notes, "Recent Congressional inquiries have shown the nature of the "assistance" he receives from greedy steamship agents and bankers, who persuade him by false promises to mortgage his home, his few belongings, and his wages for months to come for a ticket to the land where plenty of work is to be had at princely wages" (Riis Chapter V). This sort of information also provides the student with an understanding of Riis and what he is saying in his work. In looking at the previous excerpt it is evident that the author has sympathy and compassion for the minorities in some way. It is also evident that he is well aware of how the government, and other swindlers, will do whatever they can to make money off of the unfortunate people who would believe promises of wealth. ...
