and home as the characters attempt to overcome overwhelming odds to reunite with those they love. Clearly, this story forgoes the splendor and nobility of battle that its precursor,
the Iliad, had deemed so intrinsic to the plot. It is indeed interesting to note the plethora of examples which can be cited in order to provide evidence of
the authors intent to support the ideals of family and home. How the Odyssey Enforces Family Values The Odyssey is a
story which honors both home and family, and the cast of warriors who have battled for years seek to return to those they love. Much of the Odyssey then
is based upon the struggle of Odysseus to find his way home, and one often wonders if he will be able to overcome the many deterrents which threaten that mission.
Odysseus has been separated from his family for many years, and he wants very much to be with them again - as much as they want him to come
home. In regards to his home, he has many people who wait for him. There is his wife Penelope, his
son Telemakhos, his father Laertes, and even his dog Argos. Throughout his journey in the Odyssey, Odysseus often remarks about these and other people from home, how much he
misses them, how he longs to return to them, etc. His sentiments and emotions in regards to these feelings appear entirely genuine. In other words, the theme of
home and family in the Odyssey are respected and lofty ideals. The author doesnt diminish these longings in any way, and in fact, supports them by making them so
