condoned some awful acts in the name of national security. This paper considers how the media has portrayed torture as it is used in the "war on terror." Discussion First, it should be noted that the idea of the "war on terror" has become less and less compelling as time goes on. When President Bush first came up with this, the nation was panicked. Over 3,000 people had been killed in the 9/11 attacks, and Americans wanted to feel safe. This seemed to reassure them, even as cooler heads pointed out that its not possible to wage war against an ideology. Still, once the government begins some sort of program its almost impossible to get it stopped (i.e., the "war on drugs" which is largely acknowledged to be a failure) because special interests immediately spring up to protect it. At any rate, the American people seemed to think the "war on terror" was worth fighting, even as they reeled under the announcement that they should prepare to be at war for the rest of their lives. Troops were sent, the enemy was engaged, lives were lost, and then, with the passage of time, questions were asked, particularly when it was revealed that Americans were using torture in hopes of extracting information from suspects about putative terrorist attacks. Suddenly the price seemed very high indeed and people began to ask how the U.S. could use these tactics and still try and claim the moral high ground. This battle has been played out in the media, but possibly the greatest concentration of opinion is to be found on the Internet, where this paper concentrates its research.
