the world. It seems that the average person is far more concerned with the fact that J-Lo and Ben broke up than they are with the war in Iraq. People
seem to look to the celebrities as people with perfect lives, something the average individual wishes they had. They want to escape and the media plays along, feeding on the
desires of the average person, while also seemingly insisting that the average individual needs celebrities in order to enjoy their own world. With these facts, and possibilities, in mind, the
following paper examines how the media portrays celebrities and how they affect the culture and people. The Media and Celebrities Americans, and other people around the globe, perhaps
especially the British, have a fascination with celebrities. As one individual notes, "Fascination with celebrity is nothing new but the publics appetite for celebrity is probably stronger than ever. They
make news, we lap it up....Our appetite for celebrity ebbs and flows with broader trends. This year, concerns over security and economic uncertainty probably mean that the celebrity star will
burn bright and remain high" (Reid 12). This indicates that the people truly want to see celebrities. They want to see them glorified and they want to see them humanized.
They find escape in the medias presentation of the celebrities and it seems that in times of political and global chaos they want celebrities even more. This was evident in
WWII when people went to the movies to escape reality, and it is obvious now as we engage in the Middle East. One may wonder if the entire relationship between
the public and the celebrities is because of the media, or if it is because the people really want to see celebrities and the media takes advantage of this. It
