and experience. Discussion The military is similar to a large corporation and at the same time utterly different. In no other setting is a person expected to wear a uniform,
obey orders, live in a communal setting, stand duty and, if need be, go to war against another sovereign nation. The closest we come is police and firefighters, but even
they are considered "para-military" organizations, meaning they resemble the armed forces but are not. Thus, when a person retires after a military career, or leaves after an enlistment, he or
she has a set of skills that are not likely to be found anywhere else. Among the things that a military member learns as part of his training is how
to handle and motivate troops, how to train others, how to inspire others, and how to operate within a very strong chain of command. Other skills include presenting a good
appearance, drilling troops, keeping a barracks ready for inspection, and working as part of a team. Military leaders have even gone on to become President: Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight
D. Eisenhower among them. What military personnel bring with them, first and foremost, is discipline. They have been living in an environment that is rigidly controlled: they are expected to
be at a certain place at a particular time, in a uniform that can pass a rigorous inspection. The military tells them how to wear their hair, if they can
have a beard and how long it can be; it tells women to keep their hair short and even dictates whether or not they can wear nail polish and jewelry.
