much of our communication takes place through symbols, which have to be understood, shared and interpreted for the communication to make sense. Blumer (1969), who
developed the theory of symbolic interaction, asserts that people structure their behaviour according to the meanings which things have for them, and therefore the same thing might have different meanings
to different people, or to the same person at different times, and so on. However, all these categories of meaning have their origins in our interactions with others. The individual
encounters a situation and interprets it according to both current response and previous experiences. If we consider this in relation to the concept of appropriate
and inappropriate behaviour, within a socio-cultural context, it is evident how this can be applied to Alvarezs "How the Garcia Girls Lost their Accents". Behaving in a manner which others
find acceptable is dependent not only on understanding the relevant symbols, but also on conforming to them. Within any social interaction, there will be some degree of flexibility, it is
true, but there will also be certain established parameters which must not be crossed. To do so marks the individual as deviant in some way - immoral, insane, or criminal.
However, we also have to bear in mind that society does not consist of a single set of values and moral codes to which everyone conforms;
