was an underlying competition for each to become more powerful than the other. There was a build up in nuclear arms and a fear of communism. But things were somewhat
more complex. During the 1950s, there were two geopolitical blocs in the world which were the NATO alliance of liberal democracies, or the First World, and the Soviet bloc of
state socialist nations or the Second World (McLeish, 1993). Thus, at the time, the world was divided between the communist nations and the free world for the most part. Many
equated the U.S. as a major force of the first world and the U.S.S.R. as a major participant in the second, but the reality was that there were other nations
involved. Still, the current paradigm where there is a third, and even fourth world, was not in the forefront. At the time, the two most important worlds were at odds
and that is all that seemed to matter. While Russia was a serious world power at the time, events that would occur in the past half century would render Russia
less effective. The U.S.S.R. had dissolved and the poor, struggling Russia was left with little in the way of saving face. The Russian Revolution was all for naught. Communism was
a dismal failure and Russia is now a poor country while the U.S. is seen as the most important world power in the twenty-first century. One would think that Russia
no longer poses a threat and in fact, McCarthy era politics are laughable. Why was the U.S. so afraid of the U.S.S.R. anyway? Why did the U.S.S.R. despised America? Things
are much friendlier today. However, there is another side to the story. That is, there is some fear and negative feelings that lingers. There is still a sense of distrust.
