The following examination of current American culture, customs and mores offers a similar tongue-in-cheek satire. While not approaching the superb imagination and superb literary style of Swift, this is intended
to follow his template of an outsider looking at American culture with absolutely no previous knowledge concerning it. I have been living now among the strange inhabitants of this
land for quite some time. Their culture is strange and it has taken me a long time to begin to unravel its mysteries. However, I now believe that I am
beginning to understand their culture and mores and can reasonably relate their political, social and religious orientation, at least to a limited extent. First of all, one fact seems overwhelmingly
clear. The culture seems to be based on the ability of the people to firmly believe contradictory facts. Amazingly, they do not find this practice paradoxical. In fact, it seems
to be inscribed into the very fabric of their political structure. For example, the political structure is composed of 50 small, relatively independent states, each of which has its
own government, elected officials, laws, tax code and school system. Each of these "states" is, as this implies, a political entity in its own right. However, the people are firmly
convinced that they have achieved unity between these often disparate political entities despite the obvious fact that nothing could be further from the truth. Take for instance the political entity
known as California. This region is divergent even within itself. Part of it is known as the bastion of what is called "conservatism," which is a political orientation that
