In order to understand the evolution of westerns in film, it is important to understand their roots - which is, of course, where it all
began. Westerns are the quintessential American genre, with their nostalgic reminders of the early days of our country and the untamed American frontier (Western Films, 2003). They are
one of the oldest film genres and their focus is typically on Americas Western frontier (Western Films, 2003). Westerns tend to take place during the latter part of the
19th century, in the era following the civil war (Western Films, 2003). Furthermore, the "standard" western takes place in the West and reveals rugged and romantic landscapes(Western Films, 2003).
There are other types of westerns though as well. Some westerns depict life in Americas colonial times or may take place in terrain as far South as Mexico
