Westerns were intensely popular in the early stages of film and television, but even since that time westerns have refused to die. Despite the technological advancements of the film and television industries, westerns have endured, whether in their original state or in one of their many reinvented forms. The Evolution of Westerns - From Early Traditional Westerns Through Current Interpreations In order to understand the evolution of westerns in film, it is important to understand their roots - which is, of course, where it all began. Westerns are the quintessential American genre, with their nostalgic reminders of the early days of our country and the untamed American frontier (Western Films, 2003). They are one of the oldest film genres and their focus is typically on Americas Western frontier (Western Films, 2003). Westerns tend to take place during the latter part of the 19th century, in the era following the civil war (Western Films, 2003). Furthermore, the "standard" western takes place in the West and reveals rugged and romantic landscapes(Western Films, 2003). There are other types of westerns though as well. Some westerns depict life in Americas colonial times or may take place in terrain as far South as Mexico (Western Films, 2003). Plots vary among the traditional westerns, but typically man battles nature in an effort to conquer the elements or battles original inhabitants (American Indians) in a quest to obtain territory (Western Films, 2003).
