Washington decided to create two Federal armories, one in Springfield and one in Harpers Ferry in Virginia (2002). The first musket would be produced in Harpers Ferry in 1800,
but the plant in Springfield created its first flintlock muskets in 1745 (2002). There were 245 flintlock muskets (2002, p.16) in all. The armory would expand and produce more and
more flintlocks and then percussion weapons would also be on the rise (Ethier, 2002). Watershops would lend power to the large machinery utilized for the heavy welding and it
would also forgo the need to make the gun parts (2002). Teams of horses pulled wagonloads of rifle barrels and other pieces uphill to the armory, where workers
assembled the guns for shipment via south by rail (2002). Of course, this began in the early part of the 1800s, long before the Civil War would begin. The workforce
expanded from 227 in 1861 to about 3,400 in 1864 (2002, p.16). When the Civil War began, both governments had been unable to arm the large armies that would
soon find itself tramping across the South; they looked to private armories and overseas for arms (2002). Much was manufactured up North and so the South was in a bit
of a quandary. Importing weaponry was an idea that made sense. Thousands of rifle-muskets would come in from England, France, Germany, and other European countries (2002). In evaluating
the Civil War, many important questions crop up, such as the role that weapons had played. Did the North have a significant advantage due to the great access to materials?
