people are thought to be important, and what institutions shape what we mean when we say that something is significant. Discussion At its most basic level, and as weve seen
in the readings, meaning is something that is conferred by the powerful onto the powerless. Perhaps the best example here is the idea of women being homemakers. This is not
a definition women have devised, by and large-it is the role that men have given them, and it defines who and what they are. Men have clothed the idea of
the homemaker in garments of respect and admiration, and at the same time insinuated that there is something wrong with women who do not seek this role. The end result
is a society in which unmarried women (and men) are suspect; in which women are taught that being wives and mothers is really the highest goal to which they can
aspire; and in which men get thousands of dollars of labor a year for free. By defining women as subservient-and making women believe it-men have created a society in which
they are dominant and which they run largely to suit themselves. By making marriage and motherhood the ultimate goal of a woman, they have systematically made it impossible for women
to advance into meaningful, well-paying positions in the workforce, thus maintaining the status quo. We can see further examples of the way in which meaning is conferred in James
