Individual propensity for drug use is determined by a variety of sociological and physiological factors. Regardless of the reasons, however, drug abuse among adolescents has become one of the
most pressing issues of our time. Of particular concern is the growing abuse of marijuana and cocaine. Regardless of the substance being abused, however, drug abuse is inextricably
linked with many of the social problems we face today. Not only is drug use counterproductive to the family and school environments, in many cases it is linked to
criminal and deviant behavior. Drug abusers all too often turn to crime to pay for their habits, they fail academically, and they fail in society as a whole.
Drug abusers can become violent or engage in a variety of equally disturbing antisocial behaviors. Determining the causes of drug abuse is thus imperative. Causes vary, however, from
societal circumstance to physiological or psychological propensity. Each can be important factors in an individuals vulnerability to drug use. Rutter, Giller, and
Hagell emphasize that a multitude of social-psychological and cultural factors can be involved in drug abuse. Factors such as increased availability and a culture that seemingly perpetuates drug use
through its music, television content, and other lifestyle elements are extremely important from a collective standpoint. Peer pressure, a propensity for risk taking, or even simple curiosity can
be particularly important factors. EMCDDA (2003) notes, however, that it is important to distinguish:
