what happens when a principal decides to take charge and change things at his own school. The program called GEAR UP targets schools that have many students who are likely
at risk for school failure (Zimmerman, 2005). This program includes transformational leadership as an important component and defines the type of leadership as follows: "engagement between leaders and followers bound
by a common purpose" (Burns, 1978 as cited in Zimmerman, 2005, p.35). The article explains how transformational leadership in general has the effect of stimulating participants to view their work
from new points of view and also creates awareness of various organizations missions or vision (Zimmerman, 2005). In fact, it may be said that transformational leadership is very important to
change. Some examples of leaders of this type are Winston Churchill, FDR and Truman (Burns, 2003). Martin Luther King has also been seen as a transformational leader. This type of
leadership is consistent with sound leadership, but has the added components of changing the ideals of the follower. The school program of focus develops the abilities of others towards higher
performance levels (Zimmerman, 2005). Finally, such programs provide motivation for others beyond self interest and towards the benefit of an organization or group (Bass & Avolio, 1994 as cited in
Zimmerman, 2005). The article emphasizes the fact that transformational leadership is essential in creating a moral base and making sure that things work well at the school of choice: Ravine
