Children and youth are the connection to helping people out of and further preventing poverty in the future. The ghetto is not known for its educational encouragement; rather, it is enough of a battle for people to sustain a meager existence and defend themselves against social depravity. Unfortunately, this attitude has infiltrated the school system, as well, in that bilingual children are faced with the inability to learn English, which is considered to be the cornerstone to attaining economic success and ultimately rising out of poverty. Inasmuch as there are those few educators who take the extra time and effort necessary to reach those who struggle with language, far too many have adopted the "sink or swim" method of instruction for those who cannot follow along with the class. This concept, which forces a student to either keep up or fail, comes from the fact that "teachers typically deal with the class as a whole and do not consider the individual needs of students..." (Goldenberg, 1996, p. 353). There have been various modifications and accommodations for students with special learning needs. Included in these are special homework assignments that differ in the degree of difficulty and length; a more personalized approach to teaching the individual; and special preparation for such important tests as the SAT exam (Leong, 2005). Empirical studies have provided critical information with regard to the need for these specialized focus points, reminding all that special needs students require more personalized adaptations if they are to attain the level of education they need to rise from poverty ...
