had a profound impact upon the formation of new governments in Germany and Japan, as the result of attempting to protect their Cold War interests. In many ways, the
superpowers had a similar impact in newly forming nations, while in other ways the differences were startling. Post-World War II
began the Cold War, and essentially this was a "war" between the two superpowers - the United States and Russia. The name "cold war" was used because these two
countries were each afraid of each others power, and therefore did not want to fight one another directly (1). They were afraid such a fight would end in the
use of nuclear weapons, which would end up destroying everything (2). Therefore, in order to protect their own interests, each of these countries supported different conflicts in different parts
of the world (3). The United States led the West, while Russia led the East, thus the formation of East
and West Germany obviously had a different superpower ruling each side (4). The U.S. headed those countries with democratic political systems, while Russia headed those with communist political systems
(5). Therefore, when the wall dividing East and West Germany was finally torn down, it is clear why this was such a powerful symbol of the end of the
Cold War (6). So clearly, this point alone make clear one of the very striking differences of the impact of
the superpowers on other countries. One supported a democratic regime while the other supported a communist regime, and in both cases, the many ramifications of each regime as well.
