has changed greatly over the last few decades, however, if we look at attitudes since antiquity a different pattern emerges which reflect the beliefs and values of the society in
which they emerge. The first documented description of breast cancer is found in Ancient Egyptian writing. The term cancer was not used,
but the description indicates this was the condition. This description is found in the Edwin Smith Papyrus, which dates back to about 1600 BCE, where the writer describes eight different
ulcers and tumours of the breast and the way it could be treated with a tool that is referred to as a fire drill, as cauterisation is also seen as
a treatment the fire drill is likely to be linked to this (American Cancer Society, 2005). This is also referred to as a fire stick (Anonymous, 2005)
Therefore, right from the days of antiquity there was perceived the need for surgical intervention, but the papyrus also states that the intervention did not work
ands came to the conclusion there was not treatment (American Cancer Society, 2005). This document dates back to 1600 BCE, but it is believes that it is a copy of
a much older document that may have dated back as far as 3000 BCE (Magic Bullets, 2003, Anonymous, 2005). The George
