and knowledge that a society has in order to meet its goals and needs. More sophisticated technology has often been associated with the progress of human civilization and is seen
as an end goal, especially in the Western concept of development. Yet a broader and less-biased definition is useful to consider the impact of technology in a wider context, beyond
this Western and scientific conception." The definition may be applied to the development and culture of South Korea. First, one needs to look at a bit of history. Korea
was originally under Chinese authority but after Russo-Japanese War of 1905, Japan would serve to occupy Korea ("Korea, South," 2005). While communism would reign in the north, South
Korea would be free ("Korea, South," 2005). After the Korean War, which ended in 1953, South Korea would attain significant economic growth ("Korea, South," 2005). The state was aligned
with military dictatorships but in 1987, that practice ended ("Korea, South," 2005). Today, South Korea is a true modern democracy ("Korea, South," 2005). Since the 1960s, the economy did
embrace high technology ("Korea, South," 2005). While that is the case, one question looms large. Has technology really improved the lives of the people? Many want to think that technology
does do this. When technology enters the picture, things are "improved." In South Korea, one can say that while it has embraced high technology, it also has grown financially. It
attributes its success to "a system of close government/business ties, including directed credit, import restrictions, sponsorship of specific industries, and a strong labor effort" ("Korea, South," 2005). While it
