the fiasco at Enron, but more recently have focused on the luxurious lifestyles of the rich CEOs who seem rather distant from their general employees. While some lowly workers are
getting pink slips, the executives are getting bonuses, and this happens even in companies that have been rescued by the government. Clearly, ethical standards and guidelines are necessary in every
corporate firm today. When it comes to ethics at the workplace, management of the guidelines and standards is challenging, and technology can be used to this end. Technology can
be used to manage human resources for example and assure that the choices are made in an ethical manner. For example, attention is often paid to diversity and companies have
been accused of not hiring a diverse group of people. Technology can assure that the hiring process is fair and random as opposed to hiring someones niece or neighbor. Human
resource departments use technology to weed through resumes, but it may also be used to select candidates with diverse backgrounds. For instance, a computer may use certain keywords to select
a resume but those words may vie for candidates who have attended foreign universities, or have done volunteer work for inner city hospitals. This is just one example. The point
is that computers can be used to make the hiring and promotion process fair. In this way, ethics are put at the forefront and technology can help. Yet, in the
area of ethics, there are times when one will want to make use of less technology. Forester & Morrison (1993) believe that computer technology holds many problems
