paper talks about programmers, with a focus on network administration, and how IT professionals have had to adapt to a changing environment. While some technical issues are touched on,
and the presence of Google as a factor explored, other issues probe the fact that the IT professionals role has changed enormously. New managerial skills are necessary in this changing
environment and the programmer of the 1990s must adapt to new changes or change fields. The fact that people are searching for information electronically impacts computer network administrators
a great deal. It is important to understand that the role of the programmer has evolved over decades. For some time, programmers would learn complex but antiquated computer languages. There
was a time when large mainframes would take up entire rooms. Today, computers come in all shapes and sizes and are beginning to be embedded with cellular telephones. With such
advances in electronics, and the fact that people are hungry for information, how might this impact someone in the IT field? Someone who creates networks for a living will certainly
be impacted by the transition. The role of the network administrator is important. A user cannot log onto a network unless his or her computer checks into a "third-party
machine" and this is something that is controlled by a network administrator (Lee, 2004). The administrator does this to make sure that the machine does in fact meet policy requirements
(2004). Perhaps the most obvious change for the network administrator is that more computers will be needed. As people rely on electronic searches, versus brick and mortar library visits, more
computers will be necessary. One can imagine that in the IT world, much discussion goes to this problem. At a meeting of IT professionals, one topic had to do with
