the ideal candidate can no longer put in the same effort without feeling cheated. That is, he or she looks around and realizes that there has been no further reward for working diligently. When someone is first hired, feelings are high and expectations are too. Generally, employees want room for professional growth. They do not want to be stuck in the same position forever, but while they are making their presence known, they also want salary increases along the way. Getting raises, promotions, bonuses and so forth are great motivators, but everything is relative. Today, in this sour economy, people are motivated simply to retain their present position at the present rate of pay, but in an economy that provides more employment choices, people will become demotivated rather quickly without adequate remuneration. Pay raises can affect job performance because they do serve as motivators, but it is important to examine how people are paid. A study reported by Luna-Arocas and Tang examines the prospect of using money as a reward in addition to something tied to intrinsic motivation (329). Pay is generally tied to performance, but this is not always the case. When discussing pay equity in general, there are differing opinions. Some believe that people should be paid solely for their performance, as that is the only way to assure that employees put in sufficient effort. Others disagree. An example of pay for performance is associated with waitresses or hairstylists who earn very little money because it is expected that tips will be given. Yet, good performers will earn good tips.
