Umberto Eco states in his essay, "How Not to Use the Fax Machine and Cellular Phone" that technology "works only if the rich are alone in using
it. When the poor also adopt technology, it stops working" (p. 539). He uses as his first example the progression of the fates of trains and autos.
Trains, according to Eco, formerly moved great numbers of people before the advent of the automobile. When the poor were able to afford cars, roads became crowded and the
trains that formerly were regarded as slow took on a new meaning of efficiency. While car owners sat in traffic jams, those choosing once again to ride the train
could arrive at their destinations much more quickly. Eco holds up technological advances as evidence both for and against class distinction as defined
by technology. In each case, he promotes a reasonable argument and then contradicts himself. Pretentiousness Eco decries the fact that we are
forced to overhear the one-sided conversations of those business people that Eco appears to believe hold themselves in self-importance at levels far above the rest of us. Eco complains
about hearing about missed shipments and other such fleeting crises in business, and he maintains that those individuals holding such conversations believe themselves to be above "the masses" who could
not hope to have such important telephone conversations. Thankfully, Eco does eventually state the obvious at the end of his essay, but he uses weak arguments and far too
