there are many non sales business functions that impact on sales. Considering a retail firm, such as Wal-Mart, there will be many business functions that impact on sales. The
supply chain management from the selection of the vendors and the goods through to getting them into the stores and onto the shop shelves will have a direct impact on
sales. For consumers to make a purchase they need to be attracted to the store. While marketing may play a role in getting people into a store in the first
place the experience that a consumer has in the store will play a very important role in terms of the way they will want to repeat, or avoid repeating the
experience (Kotler and Keller, 2008). One of the important issues is where or not the firm has what the consumer wants to purchase. If a consumer goes into a store
and habitually has difficulty buying what they want they are likely to look elsewhere. The reasons behind this lack of satisfaction may be found in the supply chain and the
way it is managed (Oke and Gopalakrishnan, 2009). The first consideration here may be what is being put into the supply chain, if the firm is choosing goods that
are in demand the sales process will be supported, but if goods stocked are not what is desired, such as being out of date, poor quality, or simply not in
fashion. This will relate to the way that the goods are purchased (Oke and Gopalakrishnan, 2009). It will also impact on what is marketed and how.
