it was known and it did have a profound impact on how wars were fought during the eighteenth century and afterwards. Snell (2004) writes: "The campaigns of Napoleon formed
the basis of formal military education through out the western world. " By the time that Napoleon would gain power, cavalry was a significant component of European armies (Kimmel,
2002). One might say that Napoleon was a leader who was slightly ahead of his time. He was a brilliant strategist. He was well known for using the shock
attack as well as loose formation and divisional groupings. Napoleon likely knew that newly created artillery was at the crux of his success. After all, the soldiers did not
fight with fists. It would be naive to think that successful implementation of geometrical progressions would win a war. At the same time, strategy seems to loom large in respect
to warfare. It appears that Napoleonic strategy was very creative and while attention to weaponry is important too, other aspects of warfare were clearly relevant. During the American
Civil War, some of the techniques were used. However, cavalry would not perform traditional functions of European mounted corps (Kimmel, 2002). Rather, cavalry would develop unique and new applications
and of the six recognized uses of cavalry during the 19th century, Civil War commanders would use their cavalry for only three functions which include gathering intelligence, screening the movements
