is why perhaps there are so many Christians in the region, but it is also important to remember that there were Muslims and Jews who were somewhat displaced. Perhaps that
is putting it mildly. Many lost their lives in the bloody battles. Many crusaders participated for fear of being punished in the afterlife. There was that sense. Others wanted
all to be converted to Christianity, and still others seemingly were hired guns. In discussing the period, many authors have portrayed events quite differently, focusing on one aspect or another.
In looking at the period of history, in respect to how Muslims were treated and how they were affected, there are a variety of books one can use. To weed
the number down, three have been selected as an area of focus which are "Medieval Iberia: Readings from Christian, Muslim, and Jewish Sources" edited by Olivia Remie Constable,
"The Quest for El Cid" by Richard Fletcher, and "The Song of Roland" translated by Glyn Burgess. Before looking at the content of these works, and how they reflect
on Islam, it is important to look at the religion and culture it self. How is Islam different from Christianity? During the time Mohammed was in Mecca, he was
surrounded by Arabs who believed in God at the time, but things were strained. He saw a great deal of turmoil and destruction. Of course, Mohammed would appear after Jesus
Christ, who is the man and spirit worshipped by Christians around the world. How was Mohammed different? In some ways he was the same as Jesus--at least according to
