the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, media abandoned the Chandra Levy story for this new focus. Indeed, 9/11 was a significant event that improved media performance, at least for a
short time. Media did a spectacular job covering the story and has created a broader trust bond with the American people. A research center tied to news reporting contains an
article that includes the following observation: "At the same time public criticism of the news media, which abated in response to coverage of the 9-11 attacks, is once again as
strong as ever. The favorable glow from the medias post-9/11 performance has completely disappeared. As the medias focus has shifted away from terrorism, Americans regard news organizations with the same
degree of skepticism as they did in the 1990s" ("News Medias Improved Image Proves Short-Lived"). Yet, while some of the confidence has dissipated, it is noted that the public still
sees the media as more credible when it reports on the war than on other things ("News Medias Improved Image Proves Short-Lived"). The 9/11 effect seems to be that people
would trust and gravitate toward media as if their lives depended on it. To some extent, the media served as an extension of the government. While of course not controlled
by the government, the media had been cooperative and has served a function over and above providing news entertainment. To some extent, news entertainment is an oxymoron, but at the
