remarks: "Many climatologists and epidemiologists are concerned that global warming associated with an increase in environmental pollution from greenhouse gases could lead to an expanded range of anopheline mosquitoes with
epidemics of malaria in previously uninfected populations" (p.308). This is a frightening reality of the prospects of global warming but it also provides a clue as to why it is
a problem in Ghana. The climate is tropical ("Ghana," 2008). Generally warm, it is somewhat dry along the southeast but it tends to be humid and hot in the southwest
("Ghana," 2008). The heat remains in the north, dryness exists there ("Ghana," 2008). The hot and moist regions will generally be the worst for this disease. Whether or not global
warming is a reality, the climate has much to do with the epidemic. While the exact cause of the problem may never be realized, the situation is understood. Ghana is
a nation that has endured this disease for some time but there are studies being done and solutions sought. A vaccine is on the horizon and treatments are available. Not
everyone dies, but the disease devastates many. In exploring how this disease affects children in Ghana, it pays to provide an overview of the nation first.
