how to get their own way. At the same time, they help others to get their own way. Leaders who are not very good get in everybodys way (Goulston, 2010).
One of the critical skills needed to get your own way is listening. It is essential to listen to others and find out what they need and want. This also
requires developing reasoning and persuasion skills. Axelrod (2007) wrote that the goal in any communication is to get ones own way. This means the person must know exactly what
it is they want. Once a person clarifies this goal, they can develop a plan to get it, including how they will negotiate with whomever is a party to the
decision. Listening skills are essential in any negotiation process. Using clear and effective communication skills will go a long way to getting ones own way. Some of the behaviors
associated with effective communication include having eye contact and monitoring ones other nonverbal cues to make sure they are non-threatening and that they support the verbal argument (Axelrod, 2007). As
a leader, I personally find I am successful when I clearly state what it is I want to happen or what I would prefer to happen. The alternatives for a
problem would be discussed by the group in a proper problem solving process and I would let it be known which alternative I want to have happen. This only works
