genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham" (Matthew 1:1). During the first Chapter, Matthew refers to Jesus as: "Jesus," "Christ" or "Messiah," "Son of David"
and "Son of Abraham" (Carter, 2004, p. 169; Matthew 1:1-25). Jews of that day knew the Messiah would be from the lineage of David, thus, Matthew establishes proof that Jesus
is indeed Messiah. By including Abraham in the lineage, Matthew tells the audience that Christs role extends beyond Israel (Carter, 2004). Of these and other titles Matthew uses, Messiah is
the most important. The title and function as Messiah are clear throughout the Gospel in one say or another. In some cases, it is directly related to other titles and
in other cases, it is directly related to Jesus teaching and actions. Citing Stendahl, Stanton and Clark (1995) say that the first chapter in Matthew answers the question, "Who
is Jesus" and Chapter 2 tells the "whence" or how Jesus destiny is set into motion" (p. 6). In other words, hostility from the officials would follow Christ through His
adult life. While todays reader understands the phrase "Son of God" to mean divinity, this was not necessarily true in the 1st Century (Carter, 2004). At that time, this
phrase could mean the individual had a special relationship with God, therefore, they must learn the meaning of this in terms of Jesus as they continue reading the texts (Carter,
2004). Matthew also refers to Jesus as the "Son of Man," another title we understand today but at that time, it would have seemed strange (Carter, 2004). Carter (2004) explains
that in five cases, Matthew is explaining Jesus ordinary daily life, two other cases have to do with "his authoritative action" (p. 174) and other times, Matthew refers to Jesus
