"is more than simply a human institution" (p. 7). It is more than a group of people who are trying to develop and improve their relationship with God (Doyle,
2003). The Church "is a dimension of" the revelation from God (Doyle, 2003). This makes the Church Holy even when the people are not because the Church is intended to
be "a community of love planned by the Father, founded by the Son, and sustained by the Holy Spirit" (Doyle, 2003, p. 8). Doyle (2003) discussed what he called
"Dimensions" of the Church in an effort to increase understanding of the Church as holy. These are drawn from the documents that emerged from the Second Vatican Council (Doyle, 2003).
1. Dimension 1: An Invitation and a Sharing. The Church itself is the invitation to share in the life of the Trinity. Remember that we read in the Gospels that
Jesus calls us not servants but friends, which means there is a love between Jesus and the people. That love is actualized within the context of the community and the
community is perceived as the Church. This is further confirmed through the rites of the Divine Sacraments. In this way, "the Church is holy, without sin" (Doyle, 2003, p. 8).
2. Dimension 2: Membership in Christ. By this, Doyle (2003) means that the Church is not an exclusive earthly institution. If we belong to the Body of Christ, then
we belong to something far greater and much larger than a Church and far greater than any single person. It is Christ who is the head of the church, not
a person. This dimension also means that "when one of us suffers, we all suffer. When one of us rejoices, we all rejoice" (Doyle, 2003, p. 9). Furthermore, as members
