to the advent of globalization where there is no such thing as a truly independent, self-sustaining state. Every nation is dependent on another and even the United States for example
is dependent on the Middle East for oil. While interestingly the third world is discussed in terms of dependency issues, the U.S. is also entrenched in a situation where it
is to some extent dependent on foreign nations. With this situation, where nations are dependent upon others, there is also the rise of institutions and organizations that help to facilitate
the status quo. Of course, these institutions arose long before the multinationals would grow significantly. To an extent, there has always been globalization. Even in the time of Christopher Columbus,
there was a sense that trade was good. Organizations such as the WTO and the UN would spring up in answer to problems endured by some countries. It seems
that these organizations were needed more than ever as the world became more and more intermingled. Yet, some theorists believe that certain organizations are hindered by globalization, and that in
the past the U.N. and other organizations had more power. In fact, by the time the mid-1990s would come about, the idea of "multilateralism" had become unacceptable and restrictive to
the freedom that the U.S. thought it deserved (Stewart, 2001). Oudenaren (2003) explains that the Europeans have been perturbed about the United States "go-it-alone approach to foreign policy" (p.
33). In fact, while there was a time when nations united, it seems that in the past few years there is a sense that alliances are coming apart and to
