daunting. Yet the body is run and regulated by many different hormones. My mother has a thyroid problem and must take hormones to correct that. My grandmother takes estrogen. Hormones
in fact regulate our bodies and while I happen to need insulin because I am a diabetic, I am in awe of the human body and how it works. Sometimes
the day in and day out struggle related to preparing and injecting the insulin, testing my blood sugar and regulating meals is daunting. It never stops. When I was in
college I watched roommates come and go as they went out to get drunk. I knew that I had to have my wits about me always. In some way, although
insulin is something I have a love-hate relationship with, I still need it to live. That is obvious because I am a diabetic, but what is not so obvious is
that everyone needs this hormone to live. It is just that my pancreas does not make it. I have had juvenile diabetes since I was nine years old. Sometimes I
imagine that if insulin were not available for some reason, or that it were contaminated or something along those lines, that I would die, and that is frightening. Yet, I
think of the many diseases and medical interventions available in a general sense. I realize that insulin is one of many substances that people need to live. Some people require
heart or blood pressure medication. Others require steroids to treat chronic asthma. It is true that many people will not certainly die without intervention--as I would without insulin--but there are
many people who rely on the external world for their well being. Few people contemplate what would happen without that world filled with medical professionals and medication. If I were
