What will the urban landscape look like between 2018 through 2023? During the late 1990s, Gleckman (1998) wrote about the fact that immigration will keep the economy healthy. He explains that as boomers in America age, there will be a need for more people to work (Gleckman, 1998). Yet, while economically immigration may be good for society, there is a great deal of prejudice. A Y2K study reveals that when queried, respondents were pessimistic about the future of the world as it respects people getting along (Van der Veer, 2003). While opinions abound in respect to illegal immigration and language tolerance, the fact is that there are different populations growing. An example is the Hispanic population. This has become significant as pamphlets and ATMs now contain Hispanic language. There are in fact more Spanish speaking people in America than in previous generations. In fact, Olivera (2008) provides a hypothetical scenario including the idea that by 2018, there is a likelihood of having the states first Hispanic governor. One has already seen another immigrant by the name of Arnold Schwarzenegger take this high position of governor of a state. Indeed, immigration will likely change the urban landscape when it comes to race, language and power. More and more immigrants are seeking positions of power and they also alter their communities when they integrate traditions and languages. Immigration will see population shifts. As has happened in the past, cities will become more crowded and the suburbs will handle the excess as well. In general, a higher world population will result according to a UN study (Tucker, 2007).
