to go on to college after high school is faced with the challenge of financing higher education. Whether entering a two year associates program in a community college setting
or attending one of the most expensive two year Ivy League schools, high school seniors must face the real possibility of being unable to pay for their education, either now
or in the future. Taking some intelligent first steps and combining them with responsible borrowing, good money management, and long-term goal planning are the best ways to finance a
college education. When pursuing ways of financing my own college education, I realized that there are a number of steps in the process. The first step in financing my
own college education was to make a smart choice about which college or university to submit applications. I realized that two of my top choices, Harvard and Yale, are
expensive, small, out-of-state colleges that offer large financial aid packages (including grants, loans and student employment), but their overall tuition and room and board far exceeded any of the other
institutions I was considering. Two in-state schools, including one state university, cost between 1/5 and 1/3 of the tuition and room and board costs of Harvard and Yale, and
offered similar courses of study. Though the financial aid packages offered by these schools were less in overall funding, the end result was a cost reduction in terms of
my overall expenses for my first year. A guidance counselor at my high school also pointed out that I could attend a year or two at a state university and
