as a child. While they can sympathize in spirit with those that actually experienced sexual abuse, they can not even begin to imagine the horrors of that abuse.
Those horrors revolve not just around the act itself but around the long term consequences of sexual abuse. I know because I was sexually abused as a child.
I, however, am a survivor. I hope that my story will make others that have experienced similar stories survivors too. My story
of sexual abuse starts when I was just seven years old. My mother, my brother, and I had moved from our home in Illinois to be closer to my
mothers brothers and sisters in Kentucky. One of those sisters was to become a facilitator for the man that eventually abused not just me but one of my cousins.
That man was her husband and my uncle. Fortunately, he died soon after our move and I only suffered at his hands one time. Never-the-less, I can
still feel the pain. I can still smell the alcohol and tobacco on his breath and I still tear up when I think of my aunt just inside the
door well within earshot of what was happening right under her own roof. My story, thankfully, is a story of triumph. I
not only survived the abuse, I became a successful and confident adult. My cousins story, however, is not so triumphant. She spiraled downward aided by alcoholism and drug
abuse. She became sexually promiscuous at a very young age. She dropped out of school, married, had a child when she was only sixteen, divorced, gave up custody
