are flooded with new wear resembling what the elite create. There is a sense that one has to wear what is popular and although that is the case, there are
fashion movements that go counter to the popular culture. An example of this is that inner city boys began to wear their pants very low and baggy. However, the fashion
industry soon picked up on this and brought it to the mainstream. Generally speaking, choosing clothing is enjoyable and gives people a sense of identity. What they wear says something
about who they are. As much as fashion is something to be enjoyed, it is also something that is a part of popular culture and deserves to be studied intricately.
The history of fashion however is written in a myriad of ways. There are various perspectives on what people wear and why and disagreements among theorists. One way to look
at fashion is that it is merely something that is a reflection of society. Hippies of the 1960s used their mode of dress to make a statement but futuristic clothing
appear to be nothing more than practical. One comedian jokingly said it would be easier if everyone would dress like people of the future. It is true that many science
fiction writers and producers of sci-fi films dress their characters in classic, monotone suits which show little individuality. Much like life on a chain gang, the people of the future
appear to be nothing more than programmed units. The dress certainly adds to that particular mentality. There is a case for suggesting that fashion is more than raiment and perhaps
