works to the tastes of Elizabethan audiences, and as a result Hamlet in particular represents the times in which he lived. Therefore, he would probably be quite surprised to
discover that the issues Hamlet wrestles with throughout the course of the tragedy are those with which college students of the twenty-first century can easily relate. The world
of young Prince Hamlet of Denmark closely resembled the turbulent social and political landscape of Elizabeth I "in the final years of... [her] reign" (MacCary 27). England was in
a constant state of war, as was Denmark was in the play as evidenced by frequent territorial disputes with Norway. The atmosphere was that of rebellion, which was the
perfect setting for Hamlets tragic tales of woe. He had his entire future mapped out for him. He would succeed his father, King Hamlet, as monarch, and was
attending Wittenberg University to receive the academic and religious instruction befitting a Protestant ruler. Then, overnight, everything changes. His father is murdered, his mother Queen Gertrude remarries Hamlet
