of the first ten years of e-commerce (Industry luminaries to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Ecommerce, 2004). The CEO of CNET, Shelby Bonnie, pointed out that at the time, e-commerce
transactions were occurring over "what was a fledgling new medium." (Industry luminaries ..., 2004). But even though that "new medium" has grown tremendously, "there is still much more to come
as e-commerce develops into a major underpinning of the global economy" (Industry luminaries ..., 2004). That growth depends on the ability of e-commerce businesses to attract new customers as well
as holding the ones they already have, and that in turn depends on the user having a good experience with the businesss website. That website is created using hypertext markup
language, commonly known as HTML. HTML A markup language like HTML "combines text and extra information about the text" (Markup language, 2006). That is, it not only gives information, it
describes the way in which that information is to be presented (bold, italics, centered and so on). There are many markup languages, but HTML is the best known, and is
"one of the foundations of the World Wide Web" (Markup language, 2006). There are several different types of markup language including presentational, procedural, descriptive and general, but it is beyond
the scope of this paper to investigate them in depth (Markup language, 2006). Suffice it to say that each serves a specific purpose regarding the way in which text is
presented, interpreted or manipulated. Presentational markup "is an attempt to infer document structure from cues in the encoding" while procedural markup is "typically also focused on the presentation of text"
