that is certainly New York City. Indeed, politics are important in the city but interestingly, while the city is largely democratic, it has elected many Republicans to the lead office.
Mayor Giuliani is an example of a tough Republican who cleaned up Times Square, much to the delight of its residents, but much to the chagrin of the Democratic party.
Interestingly, the majority of voters are notoriously liberal and it takes a certain kind of Republican to lead New York. In examining the major and minor races that this city
has seen in recent history, one sees that the Hispanic and Jewish vote is somewhat relevant. Again, the city is a melting pot and notoriously liberal, but it pays to
examine these different niches to see how they impact politics in New York. Hispanics make up a sizable portion of New York City. Of the citys total population, there are
presently about 26.98% Hispanics ("New York City," 2006). And while Jews do not make up a number quite as significant as that, the Jewish vote becomes very important. One reason
is that even for their small numbers, they often get out and vote. Another reason is that Jews make up a significant group in New York, regardless of numbers. This
is because New York City is "home to the nations largest community of American Jews" ("New York City," 2006). Hence, the Jewish vote is significant because it is representative
of Jews everywhere. Similarly, the Hispanic vote has an added connotation. Yes, Hispanics have the numbers to make a difference, but their growing numbers represents a new trend seen throughout
the nation. The Hispanic population is in fact quickly increasing in numbers throughout the United States. Their voices are being heard. Both of these minority groups are making political waves
