forging future life paths as well as determining ones position on the socioeconomic ladder. Therefore, it becomes glaringly apparent that with the singular exception of parents, educators are the
most important influences on young lives. They are, in essence, the tour guides who lead impressionable minds on the all-important journey towards self-realization. Educators only take their students
to the door of opportunity. From there, it is up to the students to go through the door and establish their own direction, based in large part on what
they learned in the classroom. It is not enough for educators to concentrate on developing the intellect of their students. Their role is much more complex; in order to
alert pupils to their educational potential, they must touch their lives and souls. When children commence their education, they are like bits of clay, completely lacking in form.
The educator must act as a master sculptor, molding them and shaping them as individual works of art. This is a formidable task, to be sure, because it requires
not only technical ability, but considerable perception so that the subjects personality is reflected. After the student is sufficiently "molded" at the undergraduate level, the graduate educators make the
necessary additions and refinements which completes the "sculpture." There are many ways in which educators can shape their students lives. One is to establish a rapport with the students,
so that the lines of communication can be kept open. There is no contemporary educator who was more effectively able to connect with his students than Jaime Escalante,
a retired math teacher at Los Angeless Garfield High School, whose real life story was immortalized in the popular 1987 film, Stand and Deliver. Escalante left his comfortable job
