everyone remembers their dreams. Everyone has both good and bad dreams and many people feel that dreams are incredibly important when it comes to better understanding ones problems or concerns. The following paper examines various perspectives concerning how dreams affect people and their lives. How Dreams Affect People First and foremost it would seem that dreams are simply part of natures design, part of the nature of man, as well as other animals. One need only watch a dog sleep to know that they often dream, perhaps running in their dreams or reliving some happy moment as they wag their tail in their sleep. And, in all honesty, why people and animals dream is merely speculation for there is no real way to know "why" people dream. It is important to dream, however, and that has been studied for people who do not get into their deep sleep mode, with regards to dreaming and REM, will often begin to suffer as their bodies and their minds have not gotten proper rest. One author notes that, "Dreams are looked upon by a great many people as disturbers of sleep. This view is hardly just, considering that we spend at least one-third of our lives in sleep, dreaming the greater part of all of this, and being rarely disturbed by dreams of an unpleasant nature" (Walsh, 1920; 106). This author further notes that people need dreams and as such are indebted to dreams for "We depend upon sleep to refresh us, to keep us fit, yet if our way of thinking were the same by night as by day this would not be possible, since the thinking which characterizes the waking state is directive and fatiguing" (Walsh, 1920; 106).
