2006). This makes it the most prevalent psychiatric disorder among both children and adolescents (Woodard, 2006). The estimated prevalence of ADHD among adults is nearly 4.5 percent (Kessler et al,
2006). This is not a surprise to researchers or clinicians who have consistently found that many ADHD symptoms are also observable in adulthood (Kessler et al, 2006; Techniques, 2006). Woodard
(2006) explains that "ADHD is characterized by inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity" (p. 363). Other observable behaviors might include the inability to complete a task, messy school work, seems to daydream
or otherwise fail to listen, and cannot sit still (Reis, 2002). The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV requires the presence of symptoms in more than one environmental
setting and the symptoms have to have a duration of at least six months (Woodard, 2006). One of the concerns regarding diagnosis is that there is no laboratory test or
imaging test that will diagnose ADHD, the diagnosis is based on history and symptoms (Woodard, 2006). In cases involving children and adolescents, the doctor will typically obtain information from parents
and at least one teacher (Woodard, 2006). The doctor will also observe the patient personally using a checklist to identify behaviors (Woodard, 2006). The inherent behaviors with ADHD make it
impossible for this individual to learn or achieve in school. This is not because they are not intelligent enough to do so, it is because all of these symptoms prevent
the student from doing so. ADHD and The Brain Researchers long ago concluded that "ADHD is a biological disorder" (Ballard et al, 1997). There are other factors
involved, such as heredity and environment or social factors (Ballard et al, 1997). The causes of ADHD have been linked to "genetic and hereditary factors, neurobiological conditions and pathologies" (Mehl-Madrona,
