may also be argued that there has been more rhetoric that action from many of the companies concerned. This is as true in the retail industry as anywhere else. After
all, it is the retail industry that is the end of the supply chain for most products and services. If we want to consider the corporate social responsibility (CSR)
has been interpreted by the retail sector we first need to define this term. There have been many definitions, but no single agreed upon definition. One good definition is that
of Holme and Watts (2000); "Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the
workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large". If we apply this to the retail world the idea has taken root with
consumers and retailers have realised this, but there appears to be attention paid to image and perception than to the actual acts of CSR (Crook, 2005). Many retailers of goods
and serves are not giving an accurate impression by manipulation the context of their disclosures. Chevron, who as well as being a oil company also have retail outlets in
the form of petrol stations, probably spent five times the cost of its environmental initiatives on publicity (Dadd and Carothers 1993), many of which were legal requirements.
The way this has appeared in the retail industry has varied. One example often cited as a company with a good CSR record is
