while lifestyle choices seem to run the gamut, and are available to every global citizen, when it comes to education, the computer is all the rage. In fact, most people
do equate computers with progress and see children without them as lagging behind. However, computers can also be detrimental. Prior to the advent of the computer, the English language was
taken more seriously. Today, as perfect English erodes, one can to some extent blame technology. It does seem to be the case that computers weaken language skills. Aside from
spell and grammar checkers, a student points out that there are programs that translate material from one language to another and some machines are able to analyze literary texts. The
student goes on to note that computers can interpret and even reproduce speech, something that can help those who are language impaired. While these are all positive things, they do
place an emphasis on computers over human cognitive processes. To an extent, the computer thinks for the student. While the computer cannot explicate a poem as well as a human
being, the real problem is not skill, but in ideology. That is, many people tend to rely on computers and quality is not even a concern. Stamatellos (2007) writes: "Parents
and educators worry that students dependence on computers will cause loss of skills and computer addiction" (p.80). Most students do use word processing software when they do their homework
