but do little for humanity (2003). Indeed, there are many authors worried about the dumbing down of culture in general and this worry has been expressed in terms of the
news media in general. There is much evidence that this is the case. The tabloids are of course the worst offenders, but the news media in general is guilty as
well. Some joke that one can hardly tell the mediums apart today. In any event, everyone remembers that prior to the 9/11 disaster, Fox news would give many updates throughout
the day about a missing girl named Chandra Levy. It was a good story because it smelled of scandal as she was secretly seeing a politician and the fact that
she was "missing" under mysterious circumstances gave journalists fodder for speculation. Of course, in such instances where the media ends up interviewing each other for opinions, one has to wonder
what news value the story had anyway. In essence, it really had little news value objectively, but it seems that media caters to a public that wants sound bites, simple
stories, sensationalism and ideas that are not too complex. It does appear that news media in fact has catered to a public that is not only jaded, but refuses to
think for themselves. Simply stated, the masses want to be entertained by the news. One commentator has remarked: " The business is no longer enjoyable....Newspapers have been taken over
by aliens from the glossy magazines, are dominated by accountants, are increasingly governed by commercial values, are dumbing down. My sources report drastic cuts in editorial budgets, increasing pressure to
