used to be something that was swept under the rug, but in the twenty-first century, many people are aware of its wrath. In high schools around the country, there are
demolished vehicles sitting on the lawns to remind the students not to drink and drive. And when an aunt or uncle gets drunk at every family function, the children are
more astute as to what is going on. Still, denial is a function of the disease of alcoholism and when a parent is an alcoholic, things are not all that
clear. Children who have alcoholic parents are at risk. Psychiatrists claim that such children will have more emotional problems than those whose parents do not have the disease ("Alcoholic
Parents," 2005). Children who have alcoholic parents are four times as likely to become alcoholic themselves than children whose parents are not (2005). Therefore, these children are more
prone to alcoholism which can make their lives difficult when they begin to engage in social drinking. This tendency appears to be biological, although there may be a situational component.
In other words, these children have a greater genetic susceptibility, but their home environment may be such that drinking excessively is more likely. In any event, even before a child
grows up, he or she will have problems. Children sometimes harbor guilt, seeing themselves as the cause of the parents drinking problem ("Alcoholic Parents," 2005). It is typical
for children to erroneously blame themselves for family problems. For example, many children believe that they are a cause of a divorce when that it rarely the case. Another sign
is that children may have a great deal of anxiety as they worry about the situation (2005). They may fear illness or violence as it relates to the alcoholic parent
