with the current housing situation. Discussion In order to discuss an issue in which people argue diametrically opposed viewpoints, its really not possible to tackle something like the fact that
many people are losing their homes while new ones are still being built. We can acknowledge that this is happening, but its simply a statement of fact. Well begin with
an overview of the housing market, then consider two viewpoints with regard to whether or not housing is a human right; and whether or not the dream of home ownership
is still within the reach of most Americans. An overview of the housing market shows that its in real trouble; the article surveyed 20 metropolitan areas and 19 of them
showed annual declines of which 15 were record lows ("U.S. Housing Market Battling, Reports Show"). In fact, housing prices dropped "at the sharpest rate in two decades during the first
quarter" (of 2008); but on the other hand, sales of new homes "rose in April for the first time in six months" ("U.S. Housing Market Battling, Reports Show"). But the
sales of new homes dont appear to be anywhere near enough to offset the continuing decline: said David Blitzer, chairman of the Standard & Poors index committee, "There are very
few silver linings that one can see in the data. Most of the nation appears to remain on a downward path" ("U.S. Housing Market Battling, Reports Show"). Things get even
worse if the homeowner is also caught in the wage/price squeeze: prices are rising rapidly on everything including gas, food, clothing and necessities. If the homeowner has not had a
salary increase, which is likely, then paying bills is getting difficult, resulting in such things as deferred maintenance on cars and equipment; canceling vacations; curtailing unnecessary spending and finally, missing
