trying to impose off-the-clock requirements on their employees. Granted, a businesses image can be affected by employee conduct. At the same time, employees have certain rights and these rights cannot be infringed upon in the name of maintaining company image. In a situation where an employee is being compensated in some way to behave in a certain way when off the clock, however, then a company is certainly justified in expecting that behavior to conform with their idea of company image. There are many examples of cases where a companys expectations for employee off-the-clock conduct are justified. Consider, for example, the housing allowance case outlined by Shaw (2008) in which a native Rambian is employed by an American company but sent back to work for that company in his country of origin. In this case Wilson Mutambara, the employee, is provided a housing allowance of $2000 per month for the express purpose of insuring that he lives in a manner that reflects positively on the company. In the case study outlined by Shaw (2008) the company provides the allowance both to insure that its employees live in a safe and convenient area and that their living arrangements are complimentary to company image. Mutambara, however, chooses to use the $2000 for other purposes and, in fact, to falsify receipts so that the company continues to pay him the allowance despite the fact that his actual housing expenses are considerably less. It shall be the contention of this paper that Mutambaras actions are morally unacceptable and that he should, in fact, be required to reimburse the company the full amount of the housing allowance.
